Ran into a problem and before you reset it, Windows says: There Was a Problem Resetting Your PC, no changes were made?

This is not where I would want you to remain for long and get your error fixed.

So, let’s get it quickly Done!

One of the most naive approaches that work sometimes is trying the same method again.

Or, try it in some other manner, you can reset your PC while it is booting.

Solution 1: Perform a System File Check to Fix Can’t Reset PC

  1. Open Command Prompt as an Administrator, press Windows Key + X; Or, search “Command Prompt” in the Startup menu, then choose Run as administratormmc.exe open command prompt.
  2. Type “sfc /scannow”.

Note: Be careful with the spaces between comands. This action may take up to 20 minutes so don’t interrupt it.

If the SFC scan doesn’t solve your problem, then you might have to use a DISM scan.

  1.  Start Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth” command.

Note: Be careful with the space between comands.

These will identify your issues and get the reported ones fixed, else check out the next solution if you still get can’t reset PC screen.

Solution 2: Use a System Restore Point to Fix There was a Problem Resetting your PC

This feature helps you to restore your PC to a previous state and fix issues that you are facing currently.

  1. Type in the search bar “Create a restore point”.
  2. Click on System Restore on the System Properties window that appeared.
  3. Then click Next when the System Restore window opens.
  4. Now check Show more restore points options; Select the desired restore point and click Next.
  5. Follow the instructions that are shown on the screen.

If you haven’t made a System restore point, this won’t be of help now, but it’s a great idea to have a restore point made when your PC/laptop is in a healthy state so you can jump back to that point if you face any problem.

Note: If there are no available restore points:

  1. Go to the Control Panel.
  2. Search Recover -> Select Recovery
  3. Then go to Configure System Restore
  4. Select Configure
  5. Choose Turn on system protection to enable this option.

You would need to refresh WIndows from Windows Defender to fix There Was a Problem Resetting Your PC issue if this didn’t work.

Solution 3: Refresh Windows 10 from Windows Defender

  1. Open Settings, pressing Windows Key + I, or type Settings in the search bar.
  2. Go to the Update & Security section.windows media player server execution failed update and security

  4. Click on the “Open Windows Defender Security Center” button.
  5. Go to Device performance & health.
  6. After that click on Additional info in the Fresh start section.
  7. Click the Get started button.

Note: Keep in mind that by refreshing your PC you will remove most files from the system drive. It’s recommended to backup to an external drive or cloud.

Solution 4:Using Command Prompt to Fix There was a Problem Resetting your PC

  1. Type Command Prompt in the search bar.
  2. Right-click on it.
  3. Select the Run as administrator option.
  4. Type “cd %windir%\system32\config” and press Enter.
  5. Then type “ren system system.001″ and press Enter.
  6. Type “ren software software.001″ and press Enter.
  7. Close the Command Prompt by typing EXIT and restart your PC.

If Command propmt didn’t fix your issue, you would need to perform a clean install to fix There Was a Problem Resetting Your PC issue on Windows 10.

Solution 5: Perform a Clean Install

If you still keep getting the error message “There was a problem resetting your PC “, then maybe your only solution is to perform a clean install.

Then you need to create an installation media with Media Creation Tool.

To create a bootable USB you need to download an ISO image of Windows 10, make a bootable USB with tools like Rufus.

When you are ready with that step you have to boot your PC from the installation media.

Then select your system drive.

Follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Once the installation is finished, the problem should be resolved.

Note: The time it takes to reset your PC is variable. It can be anywhere between 1 nad 4 hours. The time depends on how many applications will be installed and the other reason for long resetting is how powerful your PC is.
