LockApp.exe? What’s It? Is It Safe? How to Disable It?

Opened Task Manager and noticed LockApp.exe consuming a lot of memory and possibly causing your laptop/PC to heat up.

What is LockApp.exe?

When you log in to your PC and the first thing you see is a colorful screen with the date and time on it and any other information which is due to LockApp.exe.

Its only job is when you are on the lock screen which is when you sign in to your PC or by pressing Windows Key + L and when you exit your lock screen then LockApp.exe has no purpose to work.

You can find it in your Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc at once. Right-clicking on it and opening its location shall bring you to:

C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy

If not, then there might be a bug or an error that you need to resolve.

Else, you can directly arrive at the location by pressing Win+E Key to open File Explorer.

Paste the address in the Address/Location Bar and check if you get something like this.

Does LockApp.exe affect your System Resources?

If your system running low then I can assure you that it’s not due to LockApp.exe unless it has a bug.

LockApp.exe consumes very little amount of memory almost 10-12 MB of memory when you are on the lock screen. When the process is suspended which means after signing in, LockApp.exe uses only 48 k worth of memory.

Moreover, in the newer version of Windows, it doesn’t consume memory at all.

It’s totally safe as LockApp.exe is a legitimate program digitally signed by Microsoft Corporation and most users have not found it safe.

But still, to be on the safe side you should check if there’s a virus or not:

  1. Press together Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to open Task Manager.
  2. Go to Details and look for LockApp.exe.
  3. Right-click on it and select Open file location.
  4. If it is located at this address copy address.

And if it’s not in the given address then it might be a virus or spyware so my advice is for you to run a full system scan with the help of your anti-virus program installed on your PC.

Solution 1: How to Disable LockApp.exe Through File Explorer in Windows 10

Some users complain that LockApp.exe affects GPU and slows down their processes but disabling it will not make your system faster but will only speed up your sign-in process.

By disabling LockApp.exe will you will not be able to see your background images, text, clock, and quick status.

So here’s how you will disable it:

  1. Press Windows Key + E to open File Explorer
  2. Go to the following location: C:\Windows\SystemApps (Paste it in the address bar)
  3. Find the folder named “Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy
  4. Right-click on the folder name and rename it after you grant admin permission.
  5. Rename it to: “Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy.abc”

Solution 2: Disable LockApp.exe Using the Registry Editor

  1. Press Windows key+ R
  2. Type regedit in the Run box and press Enter.
  3. Inside the registry editor go to the following location:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\SessionData
  4. Now search for AllowLockScreen, double click on it to change the Value data field to “0” (from 1).
  5. Click OK to confirm.
