Andrej Karpathy

has confirmed his departure from the company after a months-long sabbatical.

During his four-month break, speculation and rumors were bleeding out about his return. Though, he was optimistic about his return to Tesla at the end of his vacation.

Looks like the rumors were true

It’s been a great pleasure to help Tesla towards its goals over the last 5 years and a difficult decision to part ways. In that time, Autopilot graduated from lane keeping to city streets and I look forward to seeing the exceptionally strong Autopilot team continue that momentum.

@karpathy

Andrej, who’s the head of Tesla’s AI and a key leader in the development of Autopilot, tried for years to render the company’s cars capable of driving autonomously.

Karpathy was one of the rare executives who was allowed to take centre stage during presentations and sure enough, he was the one worth taking the lead.

In response to Andrej parting ways with the company, CEO Elon Musk tweeted thanks to him for his work for Tesla.

This indicates that the two discussed this long ago. The Tesla boss even attended a goodbye barbecue in Palo Alto for Karpath.

Andrej’s departure does not come as a big surprise to Elon Musk.

Even without Karpathy, full self-driving system efforts will keep going. Musk confirmed version 10.13 will enter internal beta on Friday

How do you think this would effect Tesla?
